Turns along the way: Pomene, Vilanculos turn
Directions: Follow the sand road from Morrungulo back to the EN1. On the
EN1 it's a continuous road until you reach the turn off for Vilanculos.
Distances: The turn off for Pomene Lodge is about 5km out of Massinga and
54km long. From Massinga to: Unguane is 36km, Nhachenque is 63km, Murure is 111km,
Vilanculos turn off is 163km, Vilanculos is 181km.
General condition: This road is in good condition and tarmaced all the
way. However there are roadwork's to be bypassed just south of the
Vilanculos turn off.
Recommended Speed: 80km/h.
Signage: Good
Mobile Phone Reception: Up to Massinga it's fine. Passed here you won't
get any until Vilanculos.
Petrol Stations: In Massinga, Mapinhane and Vilanculos.

If you're looking for a place in this region then check out Pomona,
it's stunning. The drive on this section of the EN1 is very straightforward,
but the road works are stuffing it up a little, as you have to leave the
EN1 entirely to bypass it, in the rains this can get extremely muddy.
There is an unusual concentration of Baobab trees 17km after Unguane.

Directions: Head out of Vilanculos to the T-Junction for the EN1
Distances: Vilanculos to: T-Junction is 19km, Temane turn is 51km, Maimelane
is 57km, Vulanjane is 65km, Inhassoro turn is 69km, Inhassoro is 83km.
General condition: The EN1 road is in good condition and tarmaced all the
way. Be aware of oncoming traffic when driving into Inhassoro the road gets
very narrow.
Recommended Speed: 100km/h.

Car Towing: Within Vilanculos, otherwise flag a lorry down to tow you in. Make
sure you have a good tow rope when provisioning for this trip.

A short route and easy drive. There's a place just north of Inhassoro called Bartolomeu Dias. It comes highly recommended as a camping destination. There are two routes you can take to this place one on a sandy back road the other the beach. The beach is much faster as speeds of 80km/h can be reached, but it is illegal and you may well receive a hefty fine for trying it. The other aspect to consider is the damage done by driving on a beach (see General Information on Mozambique - Environmental Issues)
